UL Engineering presents NFS Workshop for Teachers

UL Engineering is offering an NSF Marine Tech workshop for teachers,STEM Preparation through Marine Engineering, Science and Technology Experiences.

Suren N. Dwivedi, Ph.D., P.E., UL Chaired Professor in Manufacturing is organizing 2-days workshop that will be held on July 10-11th, it is a collaborative project between Old Dominion University and University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

The purpose of the workshop is to increase awareness about careers in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) workforce and to attract students towards shipbuilding careers. The workshop is open to high school faculty members will take place in Room#324 of Rougeu Hall, University of Louisiana at Lafayette , E. Lewis Street.Registration and breakfast will be offered each day from 8:15 to 9 a.m. There is no fee for attending this workshop,which is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

First day's activities include a welcome by Dr.Suren Dwivedi, Professor and Director of the Virtual Reality and Product Realization Laboratory in UL Lafayette, College of Engineering.In this workshop Participants will study 4 marine kits focusing on the areas of Shipyard Operations, Ship Construction, Ship Stability, and Ship Disaster investigation and related Marine Tech instructional modules.

Second day will feature more information about instructional modules. In addition,president of UL-Lafayette may attend workshop depending on his availability of time,experts in various fields will give a talk on Shipbuilding and Skills Needed for the FutureWorkforce. Subsequent sessions on Using CAD-CAM for Shipbuilding-Related Products, Virtual Reality Application in Education, and Implementation of Lean: A Case will be offered.

Workshop attendees will implement the teaching modules within their own classrooms. Project costs are covered by NSF Advanced Technological Education (ATE) fund.

All high school and middle school teachers are invited to attend the presentations and lectures at no cost and only need to pre-register.
